Step-by-step guide to converting IBC totes into effective aquaponics growing systems for sustainable food production.

Why IBCs for Aquaponics?

IBC totes are popular for DIY aquaponics because they're affordable, durable, food-safe, and easily converted into both fish tanks and grow beds.

Selecting Your IBCs

  • Food-grade only: Never use IBCs that held toxic chemicals
  • Check previous contents: Ideal if previously held food products
  • Grade B acceptable: Cosmetic imperfections don't affect function
  • Clean thoroughly: Even food-grade IBCs need thorough cleaning

Basic IBC Aquaponics System

Components Needed

  • 2 IBC totes (one for fish, one cut for grow bed)
  • Water pump
  • Air pump and stones
  • Plumbing fittings
  • Growing media (expanded clay)
  • Bell siphon or timer

Cutting the Grow Bed

One IBC is cut horizontally to create a shallow grow bed. The top section becomes the grow bed, mounted above the fish tank.

System Setup

  1. Position fish tank IBC
  2. Mount grow bed above fish tank
  3. Install plumbing—pump from fish tank to grow bed
  4. Install drain system (bell siphon or standpipe)
  5. Add growing media
  6. Cycle system before adding fish

Fish and Plant Selection

Good Starter Fish

  • Tilapia (warm climates)
  • Trout (cool climates)
  • Goldfish (ornamental systems)

Suitable Plants

  • Leafy greens (lettuce, kale, chard)
  • Herbs (basil, mint, cilantro)
  • Tomatoes and peppers (established systems)

Maintenance

Monitor water quality daily, feed fish appropriately, check pump function, and harvest regularly to maintain system balance.
